First Increase Since 1989. At a special meeting on August 7, 2013, the Marion Public Library Board of Trustees voted to seek a library levy of 27 cents, an increase of 23 cents over the 4 cent levy that voters approved in 1989. “On a home valued at $100,000, that’s an increase of $23.00, or a little bit less than the cost of a single hardcover book,” said Library Director Doug Raber. “We’ve been under pressure to keep up with Marion’s rapid growth. Our circulation grew every year for the last decade and last year hit just over 900,000 items. We need more staff to maintain the level of personal customer service our patrons have come to expect.”

A Project Read Program on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 - 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. - Linda McCann is the author of several local history books, including The Cedar Valley Road. The Waterloo, Cedar Falls, & Northern Railway operated for over fifty years and impacted many lives during its existence. Even now, people can recall the conductor on ‘their’ car, or talk about riding the ‘trolley’ to college. Farmers rode the northern Iowa rail to town to sell their produce and factories in Waterloo shipped by the Cedar Valley Road. Come listen to Linda share this fascinating history on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm. She'll have books available to purchase as well. Visit The Iowan's website to buy your copy in advance.
