Ban This Book by Alan Gratz
Calm and quiet Amy Anne is outraged when her favorite book, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler is banned from her school library. In a series of daring escapades, Amy Anne and her classmates managed to set up a banned book library inside of their school lockers so that they can have access to the books that everyone tells them they shouldn’t have! Her choice to subvert authority comes with a high price however, as her classmates, school librarian and Amy Anne herself get into hot water!
With overlying discussions about an assignment on the Bill of Rights and what it means to stand up for what you believe in, Amy Anne transitions from a shy girl hiding in the shadows to a confident campaigner for the freedom to choose.
Alan Gratz did a fantastic job of introducing smart and shy Amy Anne and offsetting her demeanor with that of the outspoken adults and snarky classmates in her school. She encourages readers to think for themselves and to listen to both sides of an argument. Amy Anne is a main character that my young heart recognizes, and with whom my librarian soul rejoices!
