If you have a child who enjoyed the Little House on the Prairie series and is ready for the next step up, I have two books to recommend to you.
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson
Hattie has inherited a homesteading claim in Montana from her uncle. This brave sixteen-year-old orphan is going to try single-handedly to fill the requirements of building a house and farming the land so she can own the homestead. This would be a monumental task without facing further complications due to the Great War being fought in Europe. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Newbery Honor book as Hattie fought hard to keep her land and learned who to trust and who to avoid. There is a sequel called Hattie Ever After, which received good reviews.
One Came Home by Amy Timberlake
This is also a Newbery Honor book. This book has more mystery and is a bit darker than Hattie Big Sky. Georgia lives in Wisconsin in the late 1800s, helping her mother and grandfather with their country store. Her pa left to find gold, but they haven’t heard a word from him in years. Now Georgia’s sister, Agatha, has disappeared. Georgia is determined to solve this mystery; after all, she can ride horse just fine and she’s a dead shot with her gun. But, she’s got to hurry so she can catch up with the pigeon hunters she thinks her sister left with. As Georgia makes other discoveries besides where her sister went, she regrets her decision. The audiobook version is excellent.
