You may be thinking, “Oh no, not another Gone Girl!” I thought that, too, but the buzz on this thriller is not exaggerated. I haven’t read a book in a very long time that kept me guessing (incorrectly) what was going on, what was going to happen, and who exactly was the antagonist. As author Anita Shreve says on the cover blurb, “Fiendishly clever…This one will keep you guessing.”
There’s Nellie, a young, pretty, preschool teacher, happily engaged to Richard, a successful Wall Street executive. He’s quite the catch, and Nellie is trying to learn very quickly how to move through his upper middle-class world with grace and style, when she feels very out of place. There’s Vanessa, who is Richard’s ex-wife. She’s broke, working at a department store, secretly drinking, and desperate to stop Richard from marrying again. Is it because she’s bitter and hasn’t moved on, or is there more to the story?
It sounds like a clear-cut novel about broken relationships, but it’s not. You may think you’ve got it all figured out, but you don’t; even up to the end, you’ll be surprised. Twists abound in this novel of marriage, obsession, and the complexities of love. It’s available at the Marion Public Library in New Releases, Quick Picks, and Large Print.
