I never used to think I wasn't a big fan of musicals. But the more I thought about it, I realized films like The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, and all those Disney movies I grew up watching were all considered musicals! When I first heard about the movie The Greatest Showman coming out I knew I wanted to see it because I love the circus. A movie based on P.T. Barnum was right up my alley. I didn’t realize how much I would love this movie until I heard the music. The songs written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are toe tappin’ tunes that get stuck in your head, but that’s okay. The songs are so good that you don’t want them to leave your head!
The film is by no means a documentary of P.T. Barnum; there are a number of fictional characters thrown in, but Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Barnum and Pasek and Paul’s music give the movie a fun loving, inspirational feel. I don’t normally get to a movie theatre more than once a year, but I’ve seen The Greatest Showman in theatres four times!! The movie will be released on DVD/Blu-ray sometime in April, if you haven’t seen the movie yet I highly suggest you place a hold now before the waiting list gets really, really long. And if you want to listen to the soundtrack in the meantime, you can put it on hold as well (though there’s only 1 copy in the Metro Library Network) or download it right away from Hoopla —it’s always available!
