Are you a fan of the Netflix show Orange is the New Black? Did you realize it all started from Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name? Published in 2010, it quickly became a popular read on the real-life prison experience of Piper, who served a year in prison for international drug money laundering. This is her experience, serving her prison sentence in a women’s prison in Danbury, Connecticut.
Popular with book clubs, this memoir is definitely one that requires conversation—people either love it, or don’t like it at all. Piper exposes so many of the problems women face in prison-the overcrowding, the lack of education and preparation for life after prison; the unequal and often dangerous interactions between male prison guards and the female inmates. But on the flip side, many readers feel Piper treats her time in prison lightly. Read it and decide for yourself! The Metro Library Network has this memoir available in large print, paperback, audio, and ebook.
Season 6 of Orange is the New Black starts July 27th on Netflix. The Metro Library Network has seasons 1-5 available on DVD.
