Author Anita Shreve died on March 29, 2018 from cancer. A popular author, her last novel, The Stars are Fire was published in 2017. Based on a real life tragic fire in 1947 Maine, the novel centers around Grace Holland, a young mother who must face the fire, save her children, and begin again. A woman who seems happy with her marriage and life, underneath it all Grace yearns for a bigger life, a chance to see the world, get a job, and grow.
Themes of tragedy, overcoming challenges that oftentimes challenge society’s rigid moral structure, and, as always, strong women define Anita Shreve’s novels. A favorite book club author, she’s most famous for The Pilot’s Wife, a novel picked by Oprah for her book club in 1999. The Marion Public Library has Anita’s novels in print, e-book, and audio; available on Overdrive and Hoopla, and in our library’s audio book section.
