The Sisters Grimm Series by Michael Buckley is one of my all-time favorite book series. It’s great for girls, boys, kids, adults … everybody! Sisters Sabrina and Daphne Grimm didn’t know they had a grandmother let alone that they were related to the famous Brothers Grimm. But when their parents disappear, they are saved from yet another horrible foster home by this unknown grandmother. The sisters soon learn all the fairytale characters are trapped in the town of Ferryport Landing until there are no more descendants of the Grimm family left alive. This makes many enemies for the Grimms, but they are also responsible for keeping the peace in Ferryport Landing so they have some friends in the town. One such friend is Snow White, who teaches self-defense classes, and another is one of the Three Little Pigs, who has left the construction business for law enforcement. Each book in the series has its own mystery that Sabrina and Daphne help solve while the mystery of their parents’ disappearance arcs across the series to the ninth and final book.
I met the author, Michael Buckley. He said one of the reasons he wrote these books was because he couldn’t seem to find a book with a young girl who wasn’t either saved by a prince or who owned a horse. He wanted some young girl heroines who could fight for themselves. Sabrina and Daphne learn to do just that while they also learn asking for help can be the wisest move.
Each book starts with a climactic scene from the middle of the book which piques the reader’s interest. This series makes it a great choice for reluctant readers. Plus, the audiobooks in this series are excellent. I read these books aloud with my two children, then we switched to the audiobooks.
To get started, Book 1 in this series is called The Sisters Grimm: Fairy-tale Detectives (https://crpl.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/mpl/search/results?qu=fairy-tale...).
