Books designed to teach children to read are usually short and lack a plot. The focus is on the phonic sounds rather than on adventure. Absent story lines, learning to read can become all work and no play—unless you check out the library’s collection of We Both Read books.
Books in the We Both Read series have a page for the adult to read followed by a page for the child to read. As these pages alternate, the child practices reading while still enjoying a more elaborate story as the parent's pages furnish the details to the plot. This also creates a great opportunity to spend time with your child. Books in the We Both Read series come in different levels. Depending on the level of the book, the child’s page may have one word, a few words, a sentence, or a short paragraph. The parent page also offers clues to help the child decipher the words on their page. There are both fiction and non-fiction titles to choose from in the series.
The library has over 50 titles of We Both Read books to choose from. Use the link, or search for “we both read” in the catalog, selecting Book Series from the drop-down menu at the left. I highly recommend you check out this great resource.
