In 2014 a little book with a simple cover took the U.S. by storm: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Now, five years later, Marie Kondo has a show on Netflix and people are rediscovering the KonMari Method to decluttering and organizing your space.

Living and working in cluttered spaces can make it hard to relax, hard to think, and hard to be creative—all your thoughts-conscious and unconscious- are revolving around the mess that surrounds you! How many of us must have a clean kitchen before we turn in at night? How many of us have a messy car that we don’t like to drive? How many of us ignore the pile of junk mail sitting on the kitchen table while it keeps growing? I know those kinds of things nag at me until I must take care of them. Meanwhile, I haven’t enjoyed my space because I keep seeing the mess.

Marie uses a method that divides your house into categories: clothing, paperwork, books, etc. You look at everything and decide if it sparks joy. It may sound silly, but when you spend a few moments looking at something and thinking about keeping it, you find yourself thinking about how it makes you feel.  Keeping what gives us joy, or something that leads to joy helps declutter your home and your mind. Marie also shows you how to fold clothes, organize drawers, and make the most of the space you’ve got. Letting go of stuff gives it a chance to spark joy in someone else—one person’s junk is another person’s treasure. Tax season is upon us; wouldn’t it be nice to go right to that file with the papers you need, easily and quickly, instead of diving into a pile of papers on your desk?

The Metro Library Network has Marie Kondo’s book in a variety of formats. It’s not too late to start decluttering now!
