Linn Area Reads is an annual community reading program across the Metro Library Network, Barnes and Noble, and rural Linn County public libraries. This is an opportunity for patrons to come together and explore culture and community resources through the lens of a shared reading experience. Our committee selected Dreamland: the True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic by Sam Quinones.
Dreamland explores the world of opioid addiction and the devastating impact it has had on the American people. With a great reporter’s narrative skill and the storytelling ability of a novelist, acclaimed journalist Sam Quinones weaves together two classic tales of capitalism run amok whose unintentional collision has been catastrophic. The unfettered prescribing of pain medications during the 1990s reached its peak in Purdue Pharma’s campaign to market OxyContin, its new, expensive—and extremely addictive—miracle painkiller. Meanwhile a massive influx of black tar heroin—cheap, potent, and originating from one small county on Mexico’s west coast, independent of any drug cartel—assaulted small towns and midsized cities across the country, driven by a brilliant, almost unbeatable marketing and distribution system. Together these phenomena continue to lay waste to communities from Tennessee to Oregon, Indiana to New Mexico.
Marion Public Library programs are:
- Tuesday, February 26 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm
Opiate Use in Linn County. Join the Marion Police Chief Joe McHale to learn about the opiate crisis in our community – and what law enforcement is doing to help make Marion safe and healthy for all citizens.
- Thursday, March 7 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Chasing Heroin Screening. A searing, two-hour investigation places America’s heroin crisis in a fresh and provocative light — telling the stories of individual addicts, but also illuminating the epidemic’s years-in-the-making social context, deeply examining shifts in U.S. drug policy, and exploring what happens when addiction is treated like a public health issue, not a crime.
- Thursday, March 14 from 7:00-8:00 pm
Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition. Learn about the Harm Reduction movement, and how the Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition addresses the opioid crisis in Iowa. IHRC works to create health equity in Iowa communities through advocacy, education, and drug user health services.
- Thursday, March 21 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
How Can Parents Fight Prescription Abuse? Community Discussion Sponsored by ASAC. Amy Doerrfield of ASAC will help caregivers identify the warning signs of prescription abuse, as well as provide conversation pointers for helping your kids and teens avoid drug abuse.
- Thursday, March 28 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Book Discussion. Join friends, neighbors, and librarians in a community-wide discussion of the 2019 Linn Area Reads selection.
All our programs will be in Meeting Room A at the Marion Public Library and are free and open to the public.
