The Marion Public Library, along with the two other libraries in the Metro Library Network, will be accepting non-perishable food items in lieu of fines for overdue materials. All food items collected will go to the HACAP Food Reservoir.
Patrons can bring in one non-perishable item for every $1 of overdue library charges. Food contributions will also be accepted from those who wish to “pay it forward” by helping pay for someone else’s fines or who just want to donate to help prevent hunger. This program assists families within the metro area in gaining access to nutritious foods, no matter their financial situation.
The libraries and HACAP are not able to accept dented cans, glass containers or foods with past expiration dates. Food items cannot be contributed toward replacing lost or damaged items. In 2018, Marion Public Library collected 4,128 pounds of food and $10.00 of cash, equivalent to 4,188 pounds and 3,490 meals for those in need.
