When we started our building project a few years ago we had an important advantage; we knew what we didn’t know. Librarians tend to be rather good at that. We have to be to help people find information. The first step to asking a good question that leads to what you need is knowing what you don’t know. Until then, you don’t know what to ask about.

It has been a long time since the last building project update largely because we have been in what’s often called “hurry up and wait” mode. The Holidays added a bit of delay, as they usually do, but we are now close to a new phase of activity. At the time of the last report, the library staff had finished working with our architect, Joe Huberty of Engberg-Anderson, to accomplish a couple of tasks that are essential for preliminary design and cost estimating.

On November 11, 2015 the Marion Public Library Board of Trustees will host a public charette at the library at 5:15 pm to solicit input on the design of the new library. A charette is an interactive public meeting intended to generate ideas, suggestions and feedback. The library’s architect, Joe Huberty of Engberg Anderson, has already led two design charettes. The input from those sessions informs what he’ll bring to the third session, which will focus on the exterior design of the building.

Next Wednesday, September 30th at 5:15 we’ll have our next charrette here at the library to ask for public input on the design of the new library. Once again Joe Huberty, our architect, will be here to lead an interactive process aimed at getting feedback on design proposals. Since his last visit, Joe has developed floor plans and created renderings to feature alternative design concepts.

Last week we held the first in a series of public meetings to explain the new library project and get public input. We’re still processing the public questions and comment but the slide show presentation of the Marion Public Library Project Information Meeting is ready and is posted to the Library website.

We’re ready to take the next step toward our new library and we invite you to join us. Next Wednesday, September 2 at 5:15 our architect, Joe Huberty, will lead a charrette to begin developing a vision of just what kind of library Marion needs. The focus will be on the inside, its look and feel. What kind of place do we want the library to be? What will make it the kind of place that you want to come to and spend time in?
