1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Your Child’s Reading Journey Begins Here!
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-paced program for children and caregivers to build a love of reading together.
"This program has been fun to complete - my child and I really enjoy reading together!" -Library Patron
Why It’s Important
Research has proven over and over that children get ready to read before beginning formal education. According to 1,000 Books, the nonprofit that started this initiative: “Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read. Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success. Public formal education does not typically start until ages 5-6. Before then, parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the 0-5 early critical years.”

How It Works
- Register for the program online through our website or in person at the library. Participants will receive a folder with instructions and logs – if you sign up online, visit the library to pick up materials!
- Gather books to read. Check out books from the library or read books from home.
- Log your progress. Count any book read (or re-read, repeats are welcome!) during storytime, preschool, or at home.
- Visit the library for every 200 books read for a milestone reward.
- Pick up a prize book once 1,000 books have been read – and keep reading!
