Whew! I just finished “The Library Book” by Susan Orlean in an almost non-stop three-day session where I squeezed in the necessary things of daily life. I have always been a bookaholic. For most of my life, buying books because I wanted to make notes in them or have them listed in my database so I could refer easily to ideas in them that I could retrieve at will.

In Memoriam: Mary Oliver
Beloved poet Mary Oliver passed away on Thursday, January 17th at age 83.  Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Oliver’s poetry focused on nature and the spiritual world and appealed to many because of her spare, simple yet powerful language. Interviewed by NPR, Mary said “Poetry, to be understood, must be clear…It mustn’t be fancy. I have the feeling that a lot of poets writing now, they sort of tap dance through it. I always feel that whatever isn’t necessary should not be in the poem.”

Winter Reads to Kick Off 2019
My reading habits can be affected by a number of factors, including current events, personal interests, the local community, and suggestions by friends and library patrons. One of the biggest factors, however, is the environment outside! I love to read seasonally--beach reads in the summer, spooky books in the fall, and snowy, magical books in the winter. Take a look at some of the winter books on my TBR (to-be-read) pile for the first months of 2019!

You are invited to provide input and feedback on the library. Thoughts about the collection, programs, facility and role of the library in our city are welcome. This is a great time to share, participate in open conversation and be sure your voice is heard. If you don’t know about all the services the library has to offer, this is also a great time to stop in and ask a question. This is an ongoing session held the fourth Monday of each month from 4:45-5:15PM at the Marion Public Library, 1095 6th Avenue, Marion, Iowa 52302.
